Privacy at StudyGrove

This notice describes the information you add to StudyGrove and the information you choose to import or process.

Information in your workspace

When you create an account, StudyGrove receives the account details supplied by your sign-in provider, such as your name and email address. Your workspace can also contain courses, deadlines, tasks, notes, uploaded materials, flashcards, quiz attempts, and study activity that you add or create.

Connected services and Canvas imports

StudyGrove accesses information from another service only when you connect it or start an import. Canvas access depends on your school’s configuration. Where direct Canvas access is unavailable, the browser extension imports only the courses and items you select from an open, signed-in Canvas tab. Your Canvas password stays with Canvas. Gmail connections are not currently available.

Once you connect automatic extension updates, opening a permitted Canvas tab checks assignments, announcements, grades and submission status for your selected courses. Updates are bound to the Canvas account used during the import. Disconnecting Canvas stops these updates. StudyGrove also keeps an encrypted account hint in this browser to help the Log in button choose your last Google account; this hint does not sign you in by itself.

Browser extension data

The extension handles your Canvas student identifier, selected course content and source links, including syllabus text, assignments, announcements, grades, submission status and selected files. These imports go to your connected StudyGrove account; selected files may transfer directly to private Cloudflare R2 storage using short-lived signed upload links. Canvas passwords and session-cookie values are not copied by the extension.

A private synchronization credential is stored in trusted extension storage and is valid for up to 180 days unless replaced or disconnected. Import handoffs expire after 15 minutes and file transfer metadata expires after two hours. Large-file retry caches are cleared after successful transfers or expire after 24 hours; expired data is removed during browser cleanup or startup.

Focus blocking checks tab navigation against the websites you choose. Your block list and focus-session state stay in this browser, and blocked-page return destinations are not sent to StudyGrove. Opening or activating a connected Canvas tab triggers a course update check. The extension does not record keystrokes, mouse movements or scroll positions for analytics.

Materials and AI features

Materials you add are stored with your study workspace so you can use them in StudyGrove. When you request AI-generated study tools, the selected source text is sent to the AI service used for that feature. If you ask AI to work with a note that contains images, those images may also be sent for that request. StudyGrove saves generated results to your workspace when the feature completes.

Images embedded in notes are stored as private note files and are served only to the signed-in owner. Uploaded files are private to your account. Only add material you have permission to use.

How information is used

StudyGrove uses workspace information to provide study planning, imports, summaries, quizzes, flashcard reviews, account support, security, and service operations. The product does not use academic or email content to target advertising. Provider information is used to perform the connection or import you requested.

Storage and controls

Account data and study materials are stored in account-scoped systems. Settings let you manage connected services, email-body retention, and uploaded-file cleanup when available. Email cleanup runs during email sync. Preferences shows whether automatic file cleanup is available for your account. File cleanup pauses while your account is suspended and resumes if access is restored. You can also delete files from your workspace at any time.

File cleanup removes the original upload and study tools attributed only to that file. Some study tools that combine several sources, completed quiz history, and your own notes or edited cards may remain.

Your account controls can export workspace data or start account deletion. The export contains workspace data, not provider tokens or storage keys. Account deletion removes workspace records and queues private files for removal; file removal may be retried if a storage request fails. Billing and administrative history, plus a deleted-account email identifier, are retained. Deleting a course, note, or material also removes related StudyGrove records where applicable. These actions do not change records held by Canvas or another provider. Account deletion may require an active paid subscription to end first.

Security and accuracy

StudyGrove uses server-side access controls for private account data, including notes and images. Summaries, classifications, and detected dates may be inaccurate; check important details against the original course source. Canvas or your school remains the authoritative source for official deadlines, grades, and policies.
